The State of Texas Attorney General Takes Legal Action Against Acetaminophen Manufacturers Regarding Autism Spectrum Claims

Courtroom Proceedings
Ken Paxton, who supports former President Trump who is running for US Senate, claimed pharmaceutical manufacturers of hiding the risks of Tylenol

Texas Attorney General Paxton is taking legal action against the manufacturers of acetaminophen, claiming the corporations hid potential risks that the medication posed to pediatric brain development.

The court filing arrives a month after Former President Trump promoted an unsubstantiated connection between taking acetaminophen - referred to as acetaminophen - while pregnant and autism in offspring.

Paxton is filing suit against the pharmaceutical giant, which once produced the medication, the only pain reliever suggested for pregnant women, and the current manufacturer, which now manufacturers it.

In a official comment, he claimed they "betrayed America by making money from pain and pushing pills regardless of the risks."

The manufacturer says there is no credible evidence tying Tylenol to autism spectrum disorder.

"These manufacturers lied for decades, intentionally threatening countless individuals to line their pockets," the attorney general, a Republican, stated.

The manufacturer stated officially that it was "very worried by the spread of false claims on the safety of acetaminophen and the likely effects that could have on the health of US mothers and children."

On its official site, the company also stated it had "continuously evaluated the applicable studies and there is lacking reliable evidence that shows a proven link between consuming paracetamol and autism."

Organizations speaking for doctors and health professionals concur.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has said paracetamol - the main ingredient in Tylenol - is one of the few options for expectant mothers to manage discomfort and elevated temperature, which can present major wellness concerns if ignored.

"In over twenty years of studies on the consumption of acetaminophen in pregnancy, no reliable research has definitively established that the use of acetaminophen in any trimester of pregnancy results in neurological conditions in offspring," the organization commented.

This legal action references recent announcements from the previous government in asserting the medication is reportedly hazardous.

In recent weeks, the former president raised alarms from public health officials when he instructed women during pregnancy to "fight like hell" not to consume Tylenol when unwell.

The FDA then issued a notice that physicians should think about restricting the use of acetaminophen, while also mentioning that "a proven link" between the medication and autism in minors has remains unverified.

The Health Department head Kennedy, who supervises the Food and Drug Administration, had vowed in April to initiate "extensive scientific investigation" that would establish the source of autism in a short period.

But authorities advised that identifying a unique factor of autism spectrum disorder - believed by scientists to be the consequence of a complex mix of inherited and external influences - would be difficult.

Autism spectrum disorder is a category of enduring cognitive variation and condition that impacts how people encounter and engage with the world, and is diagnosed using medical professional evaluations.

In his lawsuit, Paxton - who supports Trump who is campaigning for federal office - claims Kenvue and Johnson & Johnson "deliberately disregarded and attempted to silence the evidence" around paracetamol and autism.

The case attempts to require the corporations "destroy any commercial messaging" that asserts acetaminophen is reliable for women during pregnancy.

The Texas lawsuit echoes the concerns of a collection of mothers and fathers of young ones with autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who sued the producers of Tylenol in 2022.

A federal judge rejected the case, declaring research from the parents' expert witnesses was inconclusive.
