The Heartbreaking Shift a Single Year Has Made in America

Twelve months back, the landscape was entirely distinct. Prior to the national election, considerate citizens could admit the country's deep flaws – its unfairness and imbalance – yet they still could perceive it as America. A democratic nation. A land where constitutional order carried weight. A state guided by a honorable and decent official, despite his advanced age and growing weakness.

Nowadays, in late October 2025, many of us hardly identify the country we inhabit. Individuals believed to be illegal immigrants are detained and pushed into transport, occasionally refused legal rights. The East Wing of the White House – is undergoing demolition to build a lavish dance hall. The leader is harassing his opponents or perceived antagonists and demanding legal authorities hand over an enormous amount of public funds. Soldiers with weapons are deployed into American cities with deceptive justifications. The military command, rebranded the Department of War, has effectively freed itself of day-to-day journalistic scrutiny as it spends possibly reaching close to a trillion USD from citizen taxes. Institutions, law firms, media outlets are buckling from leader's menaces, and rich magnates are regarded as nobility.

“The US, only a few months ahead of its 250th birthday as the globe's top democratic nation, has fallen over the limit into autocracy and extremism,” an American historian, stated this past summer. “In the end, swifter than I imagined possible, it transpired in America.”

Every morning starts with fresh terrors. And it's challenging to understand – and distressing to accept – how severely declined our nation is, and the rapid pace with which it unfolded.

However, it is known that the leader was duly elected. Following his highly troubling first term and following the alerts associated with the knowledge of Project 2025 – following the leader directly declared plainly he intended to be a dictator just on day one – enough Americans elected him instead of Kamala Harris.

While alarming as today's circumstances may be, it's more frightening to understand that we’re only nine months under this leadership. What will an additional three years of this decline position us? And what if the three years transforms into a more extended duration, since there is nobody to stop this president from opting that a third term is essential, maybe for national security reasons?

Granted, not everything is hopeless. We will have congressional elections the coming year that may establish an alternate political equilibrium, should Democrats retake either chamber of the legislature. There exist elected officials who are striving to apply some accountability, like lawmakers that are launching an investigation concerning the try to fund seizure by federal prosecutors.

And a presidential election three years from now could start us down the road to healing exactly as last year’s election put us on this regrettable path.

There exist millions of Americans demonstrating in urban areas of their cities, like they performed last weekend at democracy demonstrations.

A former official, stated lately that “the great sleeping giant of America is stirring”, just as it did post-McCarthyism in the 1950s or amid the sixties activism or in the Watergate scandal.

During those times, the unstable nation ultimately corrected itself.

The author states he recognizes the signs of that resurgence and observes it occurring currently. As support, he references the widespread marches, the extensive, multi-faction opposition to a broadcaster's firing and the almost universal refusal by journalists to accept military mandates they report only what is sanctioned.

“The dormant force consistently stays asleep before certain corruption grows too toxic, some action so offensive of societal benefit, some brutality so noisy, that it has no choice but to awaken.”

It’s an optimistic take, and I value the author's seasoned opinion. Maybe he’ll turn out correct.

At the same time, the crucial issues remain: is the US able to return to normalcy? Can it retrieve its status internationally and its devotion to legal principles?

Or should we recognize that the 250-year-old experiment worked for a while, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?

My negative thoughts indicates that the latter is correct; that all may indeed be finished. My positive feelings, however, convinces me that we have to attempt, through all methods we can.

Personally, working in journalism analysis, that involves pushing media professionals to adhere, more fully, to their mission of overseeing leadership. For different individuals, it may be participating in congressional campaigns, or organizing rallies, or discovering methods to protect voting rights.

Under twelve months back, we lived in a very different place. Twelve months later? Or in several years? The reality is, we don’t know. The only option is try to persevere.

What’s Giving Me Optimism Currently
