The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not only the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
