Heat & Trail Blazers Earn Initial Wins Following Player Detentions
Miami put up eighty-six opening half scores versus the Grizzlies
Miami Heat earned a overwhelming 146-114 victory against the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial basketball game after guard Rozier was arrested for suspected unlawful sports betting.
Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups was also arrested in connection with a extensive federal investigation into sports betting. The two individuals contest the allegations.
However, the Miami team were not distracted as they scored 86 first-half scores to lead the Grizzlies by 39 at halftime, the largest halftime lead in the franchise's 37 year existence.
Bam Adebayo led the way with 24 points and afterwards stated Rozier had the team's full backing.
"We support him. Full support," Adebayo said. "We are with him all the way. He's like family ultimately."
Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Terry is a person who is very dear to everyone. He has made a beneficial influence on our locker room.
"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he faces the situation."
The Trail Blazers also won their first game since the arrests, with Brazilian Splitter stepping in as temporary head coach in Billups' absence and leading the team to a convincing 139 to 119 victory over the Warriors.
"Everyone experienced great experiences with Chauncey and his coaching style," Tiago said. "We're thinking of him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."
League Commissioner Silver 'Upset' over Recent Events
Speaking about the detentions for the first time, NBA commissioner Silver stated he was "very upset" by the events of the recent days.
"Nothing is more critical to the league and its fans than the fairness of the competition," he told a broadcaster. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."
Silver also mentioned an NBA investigation into the player's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he participated for the Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"We were informed by the authorities and the gambling firms," he added.
"We then looked into that situation and were open about it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, found no evidence.
"Federal authorities has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can do all kinds of things that the league office can't do.
"So, we've been working with them from that point. Naturally, what they announced recently was an indictment.
"Moreover 30 months later, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in justice to Rozier.
"Clearly, it doesn't look good, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise here between protecting people's rights and conducting an inquiry."
