Chancellor Rachel Reeves Aims for Targeted Measures on Household Expenses in Forthcoming Financial Plan

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has announced she is planning "specific action to tackle cost of living issues" in the forthcoming financial statement.

Speaking to media outlets, she noted that reducing inflation is a joint responsibility of both the government and the Bank of England.

The United Kingdom's inflation rate is projected to be the most elevated among the G7 developed nations this calendar year and next.

Potential Energy Cost Measures

Reports indicate the government could intervene to lower energy bills, for instance by reducing the present 5% level of VAT applied on energy supplies.

A further option is to cut some of the policy costs currently included in bills.

Budgetary Limitations and Expert Predictions

The government will receive the next report from the independent fiscal watchdog, the Office for Budget Responsibility, on Monday, which will reveal how much room there is for such actions.

The consensus from the majority of experts is that Reeves will have to declare higher taxes or expenditure reductions in order to meet her declared debt limits.

Earlier on Thursday, analysis indicated there was a £22 billion gap for the Treasury chief to fill, which is at the more modest range of forecasts.

"There's a shared task between the central bank and the administration to bear down further on some of the drivers of inflation," the Chancellor informed the BBC in Washington, at the yearly gatherings of the IMF and global financial institution.

Tax Commitments and Global Issues

While a great deal of the attention has been on likely tax increases, the chancellor said the latest information from the fiscal watchdog had not changed her pledge to campaign commitments not to raise tax levels on income tax, VAT or social security contributions.

She attributed an "unpredictable world" with increasing international and trade concerns for the Budget tax moves, likely to be focused on those "most able to pay."

Global Economic Disputes

Referring to concerns about the UK's commercial links with China she said: "The UK's national security always come first."

Last week's announcement by China to tighten export controls on critical minerals and other materials that are essential for advanced tech production led American leader the US President to threaten an further 100% import tax on imports from China, raising the risk of an full-scale trade war between the two economic giants.

The American finance chief described China's decision "commercial pressure" and "a international production control attempt."

Inquired about accepting the American proposal to join its dispute with China, the Chancellor said she was "extremely troubled" by China's actions and urged the Beijing authorities "not to put up barriers and limit trade."

She said the move was "bad for the global economy and creates additional challenges."

"It is my opinion there are sectors where we must confront China, but there are also valuable opportunities to trade with Chinese markets, including banking sector and other sectors of the economic system. We've got to maintain that balance right."

The Treasury chief also stated she was cooperating with international partners "on our own critical minerals plan, so that we are reduced dependence."

NHS Drug Costs and Funding

The Chancellor also recognized that the price the National Health Service pays for pharmaceuticals could increase as a result of ongoing negotiations with the US government and its drugs companies, in exchange for reduced taxes and capital.

A number of the world's largest pharmaceutical manufacturers have said lately that they are either pausing or scrapping projects in the UK, with several blaming the low prices they are obtaining.

Last month, the Science Minister said the cost the health service spends on drugs would must rise to stop companies and drug research funding departing from the UK.

The Chancellor stated to media: "It has been observed as a result of the payment system, that clinical trials, new drugs have not been provided in the UK in the way that they are in other EU nations."

"Our aim is to ensure that people getting treatment from the National Health Service are able to obtain the top life-saving medicines in the globe. And so we are looking at these issues, and... aiming to obtain additional funding into Britain."
