After multiple episodes of tension, plots and sabotage, The Celebrity Traitors has reached a nail-biting finale
Spoiler alert - This piece reveals details from Celebrity Traitors conclusion
Over the course of the show, viewers witnessed eliminations, double-crosses, intense glares, and a memorable moment that cut through all suspense.
Yet on the final evening, the final winner of the inaugural celebrity edition emerged triumphant.
From nineteen participants, only five remained: Deceivers and faithfuls competing for the winnings.
Soon, the competition tightened to just three: the remaining contestants.
Ultimately, comedian Alan Carr was crowned the champion, in a surprising outcome that went viral and left him emotional.
"This has been destroying me, my apologies," he exclaimed, revealing to the other players that he'd always been one of the deceivers. "I feel terrible about this."
"You played amazingly," they consoled him. "Everything's fine."
Online platforms immediately exploded with this development. "The worst deceiver being the best traitor ever," wrote one user.
"It couldn't have been a better conclusion," stated a different person, while a third called it "the television highlight of the year."
His chosen charity, Neuroblastoma UK, gets to keep the entire winnings, with the final pot amounting to £87,500.
Alan Carr's transformation from giggle liability to cold-hearted killer was among the most memorable aspects of the series.
But his win still left the nation in shock, according to industry observers.
"The idea of Alan, of all people, pulling off a masterclass in deception felt just as probable as him keeping composure through his comedy routines."
On subsequent discussions, the other contestants explained the reasons nobody had truly doubted him.
"Alan could have come down to the morning meal in a green cloak and I still wouldn't have thought he was a traitor. His humor distracted me," a player said.
"The majority didn't target him because how can you eliminate a person so loveable?" asked a different contestant.
The winner stated he had "absolutely loved" his experience with the show.
"I'd like to do it again... I doubt it would be successful again!"
The final installment was extended to 70 minutes on television. There was a different start than typical episodes, as every celebrity were aware who would appear at the breakfast table.
Viewers heard particularly inspiring, and atypical for the show soundtrack, as the episode revisited some moments from every remaining player's time in the castle.
True to form, the comedian gave us some of the most memorable lines.
"Let's face it, I started the competition a bit of a nervous wreck. I've thrown close allies to save myself, I've murdered national treasures in plain sight. I'm clearly more deceptive and player than I thought."
Meanwhile, a different player noted that being in the final was "significantly more pressure than competing with a national team", while someone else said he was "totally surprised" to have made it so far.
Early on in the episode, various contestants seemed to be making a bid to become the new style icon of the castle, replacing an earlier departed fashionable contestant.
The winner appeared at the morning meal looking like a 1950s US chat show host in patterned burgundy attire, later switching into an embellished light-colored outfit.
However, he got outstyled by another contestant's burgundy formal wear. Impressive style.
Following this was the competition, with the final players boarding a locomotive called - of course - The Traitors Express.
This task saw them ripping up portraits of former contestants. Have sympathy for one participant who was hit on the head multiple times by the lid of a substantial container.
Soon after, it was time for the roundtable.
Two traitors did a pinky promise in advance, vowing to support each other. "We've come a long way, I won't throw him under a bus," said a player, while the other simply laughed.
However, one adhered to their agreement. Yet, having slipped unnoticed for most of the game, their partner still got the most votes.
The remaining traitor looked like to be experiencing significant distress to be the final deceiver remaining. "Being alone, I feel terrified," he said. "I'm unpredictable, without direction."
Social media and viewers were equally disappointed.
"I hoped against that player to be eliminated. An endearing deceiver," said an observer.
"Your legacy will remain in Traitors history," wrote a different viewer.
However, there remained little opportunity to dwell on this departure. Before long, they were at the final stage - which was the moment everyone anticipated.
The final four gathered around the ceremonial fire. Meanwhile, the partnership broke down, just when it mattered the most, in an absolutely shocking development.
One contestant was painfully banished - after a shock vote from their partner, who turned against them.
"It hurts to be stabbed in the back at the final moment in that manner," remarked the eliminated player. Later, we learned that when they message, the eliminated contestant calls their former ally by a betrayer's name.
Ultimately, only three contestants remained in the game: the last participants.
One player, appearing quite pleased, chose to conclude the competition. The same decision was made by a different player, and it all came down to the final participant, who did the same - which meant that the traitor emerged victorious.
According to commentators, the moment where the other players consoled the champion was "compelling television". "I anticipate it will be in the running for memorable moment at next year's awards," they said.
Fortunately, the champion soon recovered from his bout of tears, and could finally appreciate the moment.
"Such an emotional journey. I thought I was terrible at deception, I had no poker face and here I am the champion," the winner said.
He also made light of that infamous murder - his close ally during the initial stages - by leaning toward the presenter in the concluding moments and touching her cheek.
"You've got something on your face," he said, with his trademark giggle.
The last few weeks of celebrity gossiping, plotting and the occasional unexpected moments may seem like one big crazy jumbled dream. But it really did occur. And we will miss it.
